Holiday Gifts for Writers
It’s the holiday season, and round about this time of year every writing blog and website tends to post a list of potential gifts for writers. I wrote and published one last year, over at hubpages.com and don’t want to reinvent the wheel, so feel free to check out my list of holiday gifts for writers over there.
Personally I love giving books as presents, and have never met a serious writer who isn’t also a bit of a book junkie. Books can be a truly personal gift as they can focus on the particular interests of the recipient (proving you’ve been paying attention to what they’ve been talking about all year) and what could be easier to wrap? Plus you can send them to loved ones overseas easily with the help of Amazon. If you order online at the Amazon store of the country you’re sending to you can keep postage to a minimum (they will gift wrap for a small fee and provide a personalized gift note for free).
In the spirit of changing the world with words, check out my article about ten great books for writers, or this post about books that will help you change the world. Or buy your favourite world-changing writer my favourite book on combining the two, Writing to Change the World by Mary Pipher.
Another option is a DVD of a movie about writing and writers. See this recent post, 228 movies about writing, for inspiration. Happy shopping
228 Movies About Writing
Looking for some inspiration for your own writing or the perfect gift for a writer friend? I’m always blathering on about all the great books for writers that are available, but what about movies for writers?
I love this list of Movies About Writers and the Writing Life compiled by the author Christina Katz and her husband Jason. Every movie on the list has a main character who’s a writer and/or a main storyline dealing with writing.
They’re all here, from old classics such as The Philadelphia Story and Adventures of Mark Twain, through to much more modern stuff such as Julie and Julia, Eat Pray Love and even Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Thanks to Christina and Jason for compiling this. If, like me, you’re a fan of Christina’s previous books, (especially Writer Mama) you may be interested to know her latest ebook Author Mama is now available for Kindle – just in time for Christmas. I usually give a lot of books as gifts, but I may be buying a few of these DVDs as well this year.
